SUMMARY:DIGITAL TALK - PERFORMING ART AND ECOSYSTEMIC COOPERATION
DESCRIPTION:Artistic practices function simultaneously on a symbolic and material level because they can engage spectators in direct and indirect ways. This dual operation raises critical questions about the role of art in shaping alternative imaginaries that can promote egalitarian\, cooperative\, and non-competitive values. Such reflections align with broader ecological concerns\, where understanding the interdependence of all living beings within their environments is essential for the preservation of ecosystems. \nDrawing on Lynn Margulis’ theory of endosymbiosis\, we recognize that the survival of species often depends on their ability to cooperate\, highlighting the profound relationality between all organisms. This relational perspective is echoed in Félix Guattari’s emphasis on the cognitive\, social\, and environmental dimensions of existence\, suggesting that the quality of these interconnections determines the sustainability of life. In the context of the current ecological crisis and the ongoing eco-social transition\, there is an urgent need to cultivate new cultural imaginaries. These imaginaries must expand the ethical framework to include the rights of all living and non-living entities\, allowing for a more holistic and inclusive approach to decision-making processes that will guide our collective future. \nTALK 1:\nNINE LAGOONS\nNine Lagoons is a multidisciplinary project centered on the figure of the gaucho leader Santos Guayama (San Juan\, Argentina\, 1830-1879?) and the Guanacache Lagoons\, which are now dry. The project seeks to revive the image of this popular figure from the western Argentine Cordillera as the leader of the first uprising for water rights in the country\, known as the “Lagunera Rebellion.” Additionally\, it emphasizes his mythological nature\, where he is referred to as “the man who died nine times.” Compositionally\, the number nine plays a significant role in organizing the materials. Four distinct projects have been developed so far around these themes: Nine Lagoons (dry theater\, 2019)\, Nine Lagoons: In the Footsteps (audiovisual documentary\, 2021)\, Nine Lagoons: Lagunera Diary (miscellaneous book\, 2022)\, and Nine Lagoons: Invocation (performative installation\, 2023). The project originated during the Ikarus creation residency at Odin Teatret (Denmark) in 2017\, developed further at the “No Tchon\, No Arte” formation and exchange residency (Guinea-Bissau\, 2018)\, and in San Juan\, Argentina. In addition to being featured at various festivals and presented in alternative contexts (rural schools\, prisons\, neighborhood associations\, etc.)\, the projects have received support from Argentina’s National Theater Institute. \nBenjamín Slavutzky\nAn experimental artist working across theater\, contemporary dance\, audiovisual media\, literature\, performance\, installation\, and sound art\, Benjamín Slavutzky seeks to break down barriers between disciplines. With a degree in Literature from UNSJ (Argentina)\, he has participated in performing arts research teams (DICDRA Project) and held both research and artistic creation fellowships. Currently based in Madrid\, he performs with the Wet Floor company\, collaborates with the contemporary dance company Inervo\, and directs the experimental theater company Mutable XT. This initiative explores the concept of interdependence between living beings and nature\, emphasizes sustainable practices in the artistic process\, and encourages the pursuit of new ways to relate to the natural world. Thematically\, it revolves around the idea of the ecosystem and the forces of interdependence\, two basic concepts in ecofeminism theory that help us to understand the interdependence and holistic connections between living beings and nature and to re-direct our social organization towards sustainability. \nÁngeles Císcar\nÁngeles Císcar is a visual artist specializing in image dramaturgy. Her artistic practice spans the performing arts\, performance\, and video installation. Currently\, her readings\, studies\, and creative research focus on environmental awareness and equality. She is particularly interested in exploring life as a network of interdependence between living beings and nature\, using this approach as the central theme in her work. For her\, artistic practice is a form of philosophical reflection. Císcar believes that what we call “reality” is a precarious sum of fragments selected by the conditioning produced by the social and cultural context in which we are immersed. She sees awareness of this as fundamental for coexistence. Her pieces\, usually visually rich\, appeal to the sensory-emotional perception of the audience\, offering experiences in which ideas are conveyed through visual delight. Her work has been showcased at venues such as Mercat de les Flors\, Teatre Lliure\, the Cultural Center of Spain in Mexico\, the Digital Culture Center\, the Chopo University Museum in Mexico City\, Carme Teatro in Valencia\, and Üferstudios in Berlin\, among others. She has been an artist-in-residence at Hangar (Center for Visual Arts Production and Research in Barcelona)\, the National Center for the Arts in Mexico City\, and the Institute of Art Espronceda in Barcelona\, among others. As an educator\, she has led numerous workshops and taught regular courses at the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana and the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City.\n+ about Ángeles \nTALK 3:\nBIOTIC SYMPHONY: CREATIVE INTERSPECIES ECOSYSTEMS\nIt is a container project whose artistic and pedagogical research framework is interspecies relaxation\, combining technology\, nature\, and art to create sound installations in which plants and fungi participate through Simbiower technology. This technology contributes to the sound design\, visual mapping of the piece\, and interactive performances that merge various natural and non-natural ecosystems in collaboration with each other. Part of their new research focuses on the relationship between urban and plant ecosystems\, seeking green transit areas in cities where they can build installations. These installations allow local and visiting artists to meet and generate creative collaborations in public spaces\, merging technology and nature within the urban context. \nCarlotta Storelli\nAn interdisciplinary artist of Swiss origin who operates in an international context\, including Central Europe\, Switzerland\, Morocco\, Scandinavia\, and the United States. She is the founder of the company Inervo\, serving as choreographer\, dancer\, actress\, and educator within the same company. She has directed and co-created festivals such as ImprpvisAntequera and Inervo Lab at NAVEL Art\, Studio 3\, among other spaces. She has also worked as a cultural manager and communication director for various artistic and cultural companies and associations\, including the contemporary dance company Eyas\, BIOMIMA\, and Bionic Festival at Teatros del Canal\, as well as the Viaturas company in Portugal\, among others. She is an artist and project manager at Molinolab: Art Science & Technology. Her research and artistic and pedagogical approaches are related to the development of new interdisciplinary artistic languages and the relationship between humans and the environment. SUMMARY:Treplev's Integral Performance - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Treplev’s Integral Performance” invites young professional actors\, as well as actors with stage experience and high school students who  are considering a career in acting and attend a theater college. The workshop is organized by Homemade Culture Association (Bucharest)\, in partnership with the independent theatre company Arte-Factum\, in the framework of European Theatre Lab by the  Theatre in Palm platform financed by Creative Europe. \n  \nTime and place\n11 October 2024\, 17:30- 21:30\nCentre of Culture and Art of Timis County\, room 34 (Timisoara\, str. E.Ungureanu nr.1). \n  \nWorkshop\nWe will explore the “theater-within-theater” moment in Chekhov’s The Seagull\, with a focus on Nina’s monologue written by Treplev\, and work on the actor-director relationship. \nThe workshop introduces actors to creative warm-up\, they will learn techniques that help actors get into a state of readiness\, they will analyze the text creatively to understand the intimate springs of the mechanism by which the previous situation influences the interpretation of the monologue and the following situation. \nDivided into groups\, the actors will direct their own monologue of Nina\, techniques that develop the creativity of actors will be practiced and original approach will be encouraged. \n  \nDirector\nThe workshop will be held by the director Levente Kocsàrdi\, as an initial stage for a show with the same title that he will stage next year: “We are especially interested in the tension between the two characters\, Treplev and Nina\, who are young artists\, at the beginning of their journey with new\, original ideas and well set\, conservative\, skeptical of everything new\, like the characters Arkadina and Trigorin.” \nLevente Kocsàrdi has 26 years of stage experience as an actor and director. He is the stage director of the independent company Arte-Factum and has been directing Arte-Factum Theatrical Research and Introspection Laboratory for eight years now\, which has involved more than 100 young actors and has produced several relevant independent theater productions.

DESCRIPTION:Digital Coffee Talk with Professor Arlene Holmes-Henderson\nDeveloping democracy and cultivating citizens: using ancient drama in the classroom\n🗓️ Thursday 17.10.2024  • 17:00 EEST (16:00 CET) • Zoom\n  \nIn this talk\, Professor Arlene Holmes-Henderson (Durham University) will outline the contribution of ancient Greek drama to the teaching of contemporary citizenship education. She will highlight opportunities to teach rights and responsibilities\, the treatment of newcomers\, power\, protest and performance. \nAncient plays (both tragedies and comedies) are full of rich themes which can be explored by teachers and students in innovative and creative ways. At a time when geopolitical events are affecting the daily lives of young people around the world\, Professor Holmes-Henderson encourages educators\, theatre practitioners and policy officials to use literature from the past as a focus for contemporary democratic education. Young people need to be able to critique information\, develop opinions and express themselves confidently. Greek drama\, argues Professor Holmes-Henderson\, provides an ideal disciplinary domain in which to cultivate these 21st century skills. \n  \nAbout the speaker\nArlene Holmes-Henderson is Professor of Classics Education and Public Policy at Durham University (UK) where she holds a British Academy Innovation Fellowship. After studying Classics at Oxford\, Harvard and Cambridge\, Arlene qualified as a schoolteacher and taught in high schools for more than a decade before returning to academia. \nArlene has conducted international comparative research in the USA as a Fulbright Scholar\, in Australia as a Churchill Fellow and in New Zealand as an Erskine Fellow. She is Vice-Chair of the Universities Policy Engagement Network with national responsibility for Arts and Humanities and is an expert advisor to international governments\, parliaments and assessment agencies. \nHer current project investigates the relationship between oracy\, rhetoric and critical skills. DESCRIPTION:THEATRE IN PALM RESIDENCY PERFORMANCE\n“FACES TO THE SEA”\nFRIDAY\, 18 of OCTOBER 2024\n19.00 Welcome\n19.30 Performance\n20.00 Colloquium – Question & Answer\n  \nEspronceda Institute of Art & Culture and the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM – CSIC) are pleased to invite you to the presentation of the performance Faces to the Sea. \nAbstract: \nWith their backs to the wall.\nWith their faces to the sea. \nWhen the city grows\, it pushes out its borders and everything with it. Whatever doesn’t comply with the new order will be either consumed or annihilated. The people outside of the wall make the only possible choice – they follow the Spirit of the Sea into the waves to search for their new home. There\, in the underwater world\, they can find peace once again. But what happens when the city limits go beyond the borders of the land and into the waters? \nThe project is a part of the Theatre in Palm Residency researching the relationship between art and science. Using the power of myths and ancient storytelling\, it touches upon the topics of biodiversity\, interconnectivity\, and current ecological crises\, showing the invisible threads between the human and the marine ecosystem. It encourages the audience to consider interdependent and symbiotic relations\, inspired by the notion that one cannot live detached from their environment. \nIt is a reflection on possible outcomes not only to respond to ecological threats but also to propose a new imaginary future that is capable of including the rights of human and non-human organisms in the decision-making process. \nArtists in residence:\nAnita Szymańska – A multidisciplinary Polish creator\, Anita blends folk tales with polyphonic singing as she crafts her debut one-woman show.\nEirini Petraki – A Greek-British actress and playwright\, Eirini’s work in experimental theatre and children’s performances has earned recognition from the UN.\nEllen Finnerty – Irish artist and performer Ellen merges physical theatre with language exploration and is co-founder of Dublin’s Bluehouse Theatre.\nMarcos Mereles – A London-based filmmaker\, Marcos’s debut feature premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and has been celebrated across global festivals.\nSabine Neilande – Latvian contemporary dance artist Sabine fuses dance with thought-provoking themes\, consistently pushing the limits of her art. \nCurators:\nAlessia Gervasone (Espronceda) & Elisabetta Broglio (ICM – CSIC) \nCommunication:\nMalena Vinay\nMaria Rubies Vistuer \nProduction and Graphic:\nMilo de Prieto\nLiza Adamchuk \nThe program is developed in collaboration with:\nThe Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM – CSIC)\, Barcelona\nThe Art Centre La Panera of Lleida.\nChristian Alonso PhD\nThe research group Art\, Globalization and Interculturality of the University of Barcelona.
