DESCRIPTION:(Alla suomeksi) \nResidency for exploring\, sensing\, immersing and creating\nFive international artists from different backgrounds and skillsets will work together two weeks in a multidiscipline workshop in Turku\, Finland\, on the themes of equality and sustainability. Here you can find the artist introductions. \nDuring this creative process they will share with each other\, learn from each other and by the end create something special together. It can be a performance\, installation\, poem\, play script\, music\, reflection of their work\, work-in-progress  – nobody knows before they have processed and created it. According to the mentor of the residency\, puppeteer Maiju Tainio: “The emphasis will be in exploring tactile\, multisensory and immersive art. \n  \nShowcase is free and open for all\nThe result of the residency work will be presented on Thursday 5.9.2024 at 13.00-15.30 at the Turku Arts Academy (Linnankatu 54-60\, Turku). First you will learn more about Theatre Green Book by experiences from an inspiring international workshop held in Gävle by Folkteatern Gävleborg together with Assitej and Teateralliansen early this year. DESCRIPTION:What do the conditions look like today for theatre criticism around Europe? Are there differences in the forms it takes? What forms would we like it to take going forward\, and how can we work together to develop criticism’s ability to develop performing arts? \nIn the conversation\, meet theatre critics and performing artists from four different countries and discuss the prerequisites and possibilities of theatre criticism. \nThe conversation is moderated by Sandra Grehn\, who holds a PhD in Comparative Literature/Theatre Studies and is a lecturer at the University of Gothenburg and Stockholm University in Sweden. DESCRIPTION:EMOTION BLENDER\nFriday 10 May 2024\nFrom 18.30 until 22.00\nEspronceda Institute of Art and Culture is honored to host this one-night workshop event (European Theatre Lab) of the evocative installation Emotion Blender in the contest of the EU project Theater in Palm & the IMMENSIVA Festival. A live event that uses the facial expressions of participants to create digital “art”  generated by an AI facial recognition program. The process reads one participant at a time to fill the wall with how the AI is interpreting “reading” their expressions. The event is open\, especially to performance art artists who want to experiment with new technologies. \nAbout The Artists\nJuliana and Andrey VRADY are multimedia artists based in Germany. Andrey has been an artistic director of leading print and advertising companies for many years. He is keen on undertaking experiments with photography\, making digital collages\, and finding new aesthetics in the new media. Juliana\, his other half\, comes from the film industry. The duo has achieved several milestones in interactive works and is still developing further. DESCRIPTION:  \nESPRONCEDA – Institute of Art & Culture\, the INSTITUT DE CIÈNCIES DEL MAR EMBIMOS Research Group (ICM-CSIC) of Barcelona and the INERVO COMPANY are pleased to announce the beginning of a new collaboration that will take its first steps from May 2 to 4\, 2024\, and that will take the form of an interdisciplinary event of art and science called LuzLíquida. \nLuzLíquida is developed in the framework of THEATRE IN PALM\, a European platform\, which brings together 12 partners from all over Europe to collaborate in the promotion and support of emerging artists in the field of performing and performing arts. This platform\, of which Espronceda is a partner\, aims to be an open and intercultural space for the performing arts that allows the circulation of artists and the promotion of innovative projects beyond European borders. \nOCEÁNIDA: is a medium-small format show created by the Inervo Company on environmental awareness\, which has the first biodegradable\, water-soluble scenography and sustainable LED lighting. \n17:30 – 19:30h Round table and presentation of the results of the creation process _ performance (Participants: selected artists\, Institut de Ciències del Mar\, Compañía Inervo\, Espronceda) \n21:30h Performance by OCEÁNIDA https://vimeo.com/305729490 \nSYNOPSIS\nThrough a suggestive and poetic journey to the depths of the sea\, the public lives a dreamlike and didactic experience that shows the consequences of waste production. Everything is developed in an interdisciplinary language that combines the concepts of dance\, theater and installations. The piece as a whole plays with light and darkness\, allowing the audience to approach the bioluminescence of the creatures of the seabed through the costumes and the movement of the dancers\, which creates a mysterious and enveloping atmosphere. \nARTISTIC CONCEPT\nThe core of the Inervo Company’s artistic language is interdisciplinary research in which dance\, theater\, performance and installation work together to develop the company’s own language. \nThey focus on topics such as ecology\, feminism and science. Inervo creates dreamlike performances on the border between the dystopian and the real that lead us to reflect on relevant contemporary issues. Most of the material used in his scenographies tries to respect as much as possible the principles of sustainability in order to reduce the possible environmental impact. In the case of Oceanida\, for example\, the research carried out in the field of lighting and the work that has been done to apply it to the costumes\, with the aim of creating sustainable lighting generated by the performers themselves\, can be considered of particular relevance. P.\nSOME OTHER PLACE\nPerformance by the artist Sara Sguotti\nDATE: 29/02/2024\nH: 20.30\nLOCATION: Espronceda\, Institute of Art & Culture \nThe performance is presented in the framework of the European project Theatre in Palm. \n  \nSYNOPSIS\nThis new choreographic creation tries to identify the forms of the relationship betwee performer\, space\, and imagination\, trying to lead the viewer on a journey into the density of matter and at the same time into a perceptive and imaginative elsewhere. \n  \nThe dancing body is positioned in an empty\, passable space\, a space that becomes intimate\, and changeable\, in continuous adaptation along a labyrinthine and powerful movement. The dancer’s gaze opens to the image\, some other place\, and reverberates in Spartaco Cortesi’s live music score. \n  \nThe choreographic device leads to a body that is surprised by the movement and is surprised\, distant but present in an inconsistent but visionary space. The performer offers a look that seeks a hyper-reality\, involving and leading the passenger’s spectators in an empathic process between reminiscence and prediction. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the Greek tongue-twister game “Do you have a rabbit?” and the musicality it generates\, a dancer will pose an existential career question: \n«- Do you have an audition? \n-I have an audition. \n-Do you have a chance?» \nDancing a broken ballet routine whose soundtrack is a surprise to the audience\, the dancer will delve into this thought-provoking question using only her body and a diverse array of dance styles as her instruments. SUMMARY:Local event: RADIORATOR by Agustina Palazzo
DESCRIPTION:Espronceda Institute of Art & Culture is happy to present the performance Radiorator by artist Agustina Palazzo\, in the framework of the European Creative Europe project Theatre in Palm.\nRadiorator is a sound experimentation performance\, the result of the expanded perception generated by capturing radio frequencies through a digitally designed and manufactured technological helmet. \nThe helmet-shaped wearable works as a portable device that allows you to listen to a broad spectrum of radio frequencies. Equipped with an antenna\, it receives the frequencies that are around it\, allowing it to interact with the environment. The radio frequencies are digitally decoded into sounds that I use as raw material\, generating a live piece that becomes experimental electronics. Oscillating between ambient and techno\, they invite deep and introspective listening. \nRadiorator was born with a premise inspired by the cultural and intellectual movement “transhumanism” which is based on the philosophy that we can transform and expand the human condition using technology. More specifically we focus on the human senses and how to expand their capacity of perception. \nRadio frequencies are part of an environment that constantly passes through us but are invisible and inaudible. Through the technology included in the helmet\, the human being can feel the invisible radio energy that is around him in the form of sound to generate in turn an auditory interpretation and turn it into an artistic expression\, a performative and sonorous act. The helmet is a portable device that captures radio waves (electromagnetic waves from 3 to 300 Gh) and converts them into sound and image. This wearable uses an antenna and a Raspberry to convert analog signals into digital ones. The radio frequencies are picked up by the antenna and then digitally decoded into sound and images through SDR (software-defined radio) technology. \nMorphologically following the guidelines of the constructivist movement\, which proposes three-dimensionality as the main axis and geometric rigor\, the design of the helmet takes a semi-circular module that is repeated in a scaled way around a concentric axis. The main intention is to represent in form the expansive effect of sound waves. \nFor the materialization of the helmet\, 3D printing technology was used. DESCRIPTION:In Solidarity: An International Celebration of Arts and Human Rights \nSmashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and Front Line Defenders\, and a range of partners\, present the 5th annual\, international Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival from the 13 to 22 October 2023. \nSmashing Times are delighted to present events as part of the Theatre in Palm project on Sunday 15 October. On Sunday afternoon\, we will feature a talk\, two short performances\, and a workshop by different organisations within the Theatre in Palm cohort\, while Sunday evening will see two longer performances\, and a post-show with all those taking part from Theatre in Palm. These events are open to the public. \nClick for more information on Sunday’s programme \nThe festival showcases and highlights the extraordinary work of human rights defenders in Ireland and around the world\, past and present\, and the role of the arts and artists in promoting human rights today. The festival celebrates community connections and a world where all people are treated equal with dignity and respect. \nThe festival is supported by The Arts Council of Ireland and is a hybrid programme delivered over 10 days and hosts an exciting blend of events happening in-person and online\, featuring Irish and international artists and guest speakers\, reaching audiences locally\, nationally\, and internationally. There is something for everyone interested in the arts for equality\, human rights and diversity. \nThe artistic curator for the festival is Mary Moynihan\, Artistic Director\, Smashing Times and the human rights curator is Laura O’Leary\, International Events and Promotions Coordinator\, Front Line Defenders. \nJoin us to illuminate stories of courage and inspiration and to share stories of ordinary people who stand up for human rights. DESCRIPTION:NOUSUT Festival is a celebration and a platform for new theatre makers to take off\, create interesting performances supported by well merited theatre professionals. The festival is organized as part of the Theatre in Palm project (Theatre Movement) by Turku Arts Academy and Turku based theatre Tehdas Teatteri. \nThis year the festival gives the stage to 3 different\, new and intriguing original pieces\, all created by this year´s Turku Arts Academy graduates. Click the name of the performance to see a recording of the performance: \n\nElla Jokela‘s ISOSISKO (Big Sister) is a story about sisters\, expectations and ever so good girls.\nIsa Kortekangas brings on stage a visual and movement based story ILPO AND AUKUSTI about syblings and an adult who turns into a child when facing immense fear and grief\, leaving the kids to be parents to one another.\nEveliina Mäkitalo explores the classic story of JEKYLL & HYDE by means of puppetry\, pondering what evil is at the end of the day.\n\nNOUSUT is a unique festival born out of the need and desire to connect emerging theatre artists with the already established theatre makers. It plays an important part in the Turku UAS Arts Academy’s curriculum for theatre art studies offering the first year students a place to immerse themselves to the local theatre scene and at the same time\, giving the graduating students a chance to shine and find audiences to their work. \nThe festival takes place in Tehdas Teatteri.
