Balancing inspiration and insight: Participant reflections on the journey

Over the past three years, the Theatre in Palm project has brought together theatre creatives from across Europe in a variety of event formats, from structured residencies and dynamic Theatre Labs to locally rooted Theatre Movements. Participants were invited not only to engage artistically but also to reflect on their experiences. Their insights reveal both the project’s many strengths and opportunities for thoughtful refinement.
Overwhelmingly positive
After each event, participants were asked to give feedback about their experiences. We got altogether 335 responses over the course of the project. The results were overwhelmingly positive: 95 % of the respondents thought the event was a useful experience for them and they were happy to have participated. 82 % felt that the event provided them with new professional tools and 73 % said they found new professional opportunities (e.g. networking, career opportunities etc.). Amazing 95 % expressed interest to participate in other Theatre in Palm events and staggering 93 % said they would recommend Theatre in Palm events to their colleagues.
Here are participant´s feedback on some of the event types.
European Theatre Labs: A forum for ideas and exchange
European Theatre Labs were local or international training activities hosted by partner organisations. Those could be workshops, masterclasses, talks and other types of events. Number of events 72.
European Theatre Labs stood out as a space of professional and cultural exchange. Many participants described the Labs as “inspiring” and “thought-provoking,” emphasizing the value of interacting with diverse artists. The chance to explore new approaches, share ideas, and engage in dialogue was frequently highlighted as the best part of the experience.
Yet, alongside this praise came reflections on structure. A number of participants noted that clearer frameworks—both in terms of the event schedule and roles – could improve the working process. While the openness of the format was generally appreciated, some found that more defined expectations and communication would help teams collaborate more effectively. The balance between artistic freedom and logistical clarity appears to be a recurring theme.

Local Theatre Movement: Grounded creativity with room to grow
Theatre Movements were local co-productions and happenings. Number of events 60.
When talking about the Local Theatre Movement events, participants spoke passionately about the emotionally charged atmosphere and the integration of multimedia elements such as music and digital art. Performances were described as deeply relevant, reflecting social and local contexts in powerful ways. Many considered these events to be among the most memorable, precisely because of their immediacy and emotional connection to audiences.
However, some participants pointed to the need for improved coordination. Technical resources and practical support were occasionally limited, affecting the smooth execution of ideas. A more structured approach to production planning was suggested, particularly for events involving complex artistic setups. The feedback points to a desire to maintain the creative impact while streamlining the practical aspects.

Residencies: Space to create, with clearer pathways
Tree rounds of residencies were organized in all 12 countries; Digital Residency in 2023, Hybrid Residency in 2023 and Physical Residencies in 2024.
All of the 3 different types of residencies (digital, hybrid and live) were widely praised as rare opportunities for immersive exploration. Many participants described the experience as energizing, highlighting the supportive environment, the collaborative spirit, and the depth of artistic connection. The chance to work intensively alongside other theatre-makers, exchange feedback, and develop projects in a focused space was central to what made the residencies so special.
At the same time, some reflections centered on the need for better-defined collaborative structures. While the freedom to shape one’s own process was appreciated, some participants felt that clearer communication about collaborative expectations and access to shared resources could enhance the experience further. For newcomers especially, more orientation at the outset could help ensure that the creative potential of the residency is fully realized.

Looking ahead
Theatre in Palm clearly succeeded in fostering vibrant, creative environments that participants valued deeply. Across all event types, there is a strong appreciation for the opportunities to connect, explore, and grow professionally. At the same time, feedback points to practical areas where subtle adjustments – in structure, communication, and resource planning – could elevate the experience further. Listening to these voices offers a valuable feedback for the future: one where flexibility and clarity work hand in hand, and where the foundations of artistic freedom are supported by thoughtful logistics.
