S.E.I. Antigone: Art, Activism, and Theatre in Reggio Emilia

On July 13th, the Officine Creative Reggiane in Reggio Emilia hosted S.E.I. Antigone, an immersive theatrical event that combined performance with social reflection. With 52 participants actively engaged, the initiative transcended traditional theatre, inviting the audience to explore pressing social and environmental themes.

The event marked the conclusion of the SEI (Summer Intensive Seminar), a six-day workshop organized by Centro Teatrale MaMiMò. Set in a natural, distraction-free environment, the seminar provided ten emerging artists with an opportunity to refine their skills while exploring the intersection of art and activism. Beyond technical development, the program encouraged artists to use theatre as a means to address contemporary global challenges.

The 2024 edition of SEI took inspiration from the European Theatre in Palm project, focusing on two critical issues: social justice and climate change. The creative process was shaped by two key references: Sophocles’ Antigone, a timeless story of resistance against injustice, and a speech by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, highlighting the urgency of climate action.

By integrating classical and modern perspectives, the workshop inspired artists to view theatre as a tool for collective awareness. The final performance, open to the public, conveyed these themes through compelling storytelling in an industrial setting that reinforced the message of environmental impact and social responsibility.

S.E.I. Antigone was more than a theatrical performance—it was an invitation to reflect and engage. The dynamic finale encouraged interaction between performers and the audience, transforming spectators into active participants in a shared dialogue. The event was not just for theatre enthusiasts but for anyone interested in justice, sustainability, and the power of art in shaping society.

Through creativity and collaboration, S.E.I. Antigone demonstrated how theatre can inspire awareness and action. The event left a lasting impact, reaffirming the role of the arts in fostering meaningful conversations about the challenges we face today.
