THEATRE IN PALM GO AND SEE EXPERIENCE, ZID AMSTERDAM workshop 11/3/2023

Dear everyone, I would like to introduce myself as the new emerging artists of European Theatre and Film Institute based in Brussels, Belgium.

My name is Klara Jovanov and I am studying Film and Media at the University of Stirling in Scotland. Originally from Croatia, Zagreb.

As the new emerging artist of ETFI I had a privilege to take part in the trip to Amsterdam to exploring ZID THEATRE, a partner of ETFI and attending workshops and conferences in ZID THEATRE by Odin Theatre including Workshop: The Echo of Silence by Julia Varley, the Masterclass: Creative principles by Eugenio Barba, Julia Varley and Extra programme Film: The Art of the Impossible – The Long Journey of Eugenio Barba and ODIN TEATRET + Presentation followed by the Work demonstration/Performance: The Flying Carpet | Julia Varley and Closing Words by Eugenio Barba.

Odin Teatret is an avant-garde theatre group based in HolstebroDenmark. It was founded by Italian theatre director and investigator Eugenio Barba in 1964. Odin Teatret is a part of NTL, Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium, which also includes the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA), founded in 1979, and the Centre for Theatre Laboratory Studies (CTLS), founded in 2002. ZID founders were the students of Odin Theatre in the past. Attending the workshop hosted by Eugenio Barba and Julia Vardy at the ZID interdisciplinary theatre in Amsterdam was a transformative experience.  The teaching was profound and thoughtfully crafted, offering deep insights into the art of theatre-making. Eugenio and Julia’s approach was not only theoretical but highly practical, incorporating exercises that encouraged creative exploration while grounding us in solid artistic principles. Their ability to address complex themes with clarity and provide tangible solutions made the workshop both enriching and inspiring.

The atmosphere fostered collaboration, allowing me to connect with a diverse group of new people, including Karolina Spaić, the executive director of the theatre, which further expanded my professional network.

Overall, it was an invaluable experience that deepened my understanding of theatre and expanded my creative toolkit.
