TIP in Cyprus: Supporting Artistic Excellence at PQ2023

Theatre in Palm gave a wonderful opportunity for visibility to Cypriot emerging artists participating in the prestigious Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space 2023 (PQ2023), where they showcased groundbreaking works of performance design, scenography, and interdisciplinary art.

Since 1991, the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) has consistently represented Cyprus at the Prague Quadrennial, highlighting the country’s creative contributions to global artistic dialogue. This year’s participation included the National Exhibit, as well as independent Cypriot projects, reflecting Cyprus’ rich artistic diversity. In 2023 THOC received the grand prize, “The Golden Triga”, for the presentation “Spectators in a Ghost City”.

Theatre in Palm Hosts Cyprus Artists at PQ2023

As part of its mission to support and promote Cypriot artists, THOC organized an exclusive presentation event on June 10th, 2023 (10:00–11:30), supported by Theatre in Palm, held at the Cyprus National Exhibit. The event brought together the participating artists, curators, and the wider PQ audience, offering a platform to mingle, exchange ideas, and explore the creative work of Cypriot contributors at PQ2023.

Attendees were introduced to the following projects:

     1. Spectators in a Ghost City – Cyprus National Participation (Exhibition of Countries and Regions)

        • Curator & Initial Concept: Marina Maleni

        • Artistic Research & Design: Melita Couta

The Cyprus National Exhibit explored themes of memory, space, and conflict through scenographic methodologies inspired by the ghost city of Famagusta. The installation combined images, archival materials, and performative elements, inviting audiences to reflect on the sociopolitical realities of the enclosed city.

Participants shared insights into their creative processes, discussed the conceptual foundations of their works, and explored the broader implications of performance design in contemporary art and society in front of an international audience.

This gathering served as a celebration of Cyprus’ vibrant cultural scene and reaffirmed Theatre in Palm’s commitment to fostering artistic exchange and promoting Cypriot artists on the international stage.
